Events involving Merseyside Police in 2007 - 2008

March ‘07  - Launch of a recently formed Hate Crime Investigation Unit who are trained to specifically target all hate crime within Merseyside. In addition each of the six areas in Merseyside have hate incident coordinator who give guidance about the most appropriate way to deal with incidents interpreters are on hand to assist those who don’t speak English or are hearing or visually impaired.  

March ’07 - The Wirral Area of Merseyside Police is hosting sporting events involving police officers and members of various ethnic communities. A recent event was a football match between serving and retired officers and members of the Bangladeshi community. To build bridges with Wirral’s diverse communities the Wirral community relations unit are planning similar events in the year. Dates to be confirmed

March ’07 – Gypsy/travellers conference  - A joint conference between police and Irish community centre to advance multi agency response to increase understanding and needs of gypsy/travellers 

March ’07 – Yemeni open day – joint organised event bringing together police and members of the Yemeni community. An informal event with music and entertainment providing an opportunity for people to come together  

July ’07 – Arabic open day – A multi cultural music and entertainment event held each year in Sefton Park, Liverpool. Date to be confirmed

August ’07  - Anthony Walker Foundation – A Multi cultural youth sports, music and cultural activities in Sefton Park. Date to be confirmed 

October  ‘07  - Chief Challenge - This is an activity organised by the police and engages and brings together youths from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds to participate in water sports and compete for a cup presented by the Chief Constable. The event was held in 2006. It was deemed such a great success receiving wide coverage in the local media that preparations are in hand to repeat the event on an annual basis. Date to be confirmed
