Lead Scotland, Linking Education and Disability
Lead Scotland exists to widen access to lifelong learning. For over 28 years, Lead has provided a holistic, tailored service which actively encourages independent learning. We are funded specifically to work with disabled people (16+) and carers and we involve volunteers in providing our services. Diversity and learning are fundamental aspects of the culture and ethos that Lead Scotland strives to promote and this is actively reflected in the diverse mix of staff, volunteers and learners.
How do we promote a culture of diversity?
- In April we had a 2 day Diversity and Communication staff conference, sponsored by ILA Scotland, delivered in diverse sessions via music, words, actions, physical space, etc
- Lead actively promotes inclusive volunteering opportunities, using technology and other creative solutions to maximise participation, eg using Skype technology to enabled a housebound volunteer to offer virtual support to learners
- Staff and volunteers can access disability equality and diversity training, amongst a portfolio of other role-specific training
- Lead’s website has been set up to be accessible and usable, including easyread options, British Sign Language clips, and options to change colours and text sizes. 20 disabled people with a range of impairments were actively involved in diverse ways in the websites development.
- Staff and volunteers have the opportunity to get involved in annually reviewing Lead’s equality and diversity policy
- We provide disability equality and diversity training to other organisations
