Background

As we all know, embedding EDI is a difficult journey and it’s often not a top priority for some organisations. For too long EDI practitioners have not shared the same status and professional recognition as colleagues in more well established functions such as finance and marketing.  This is combined with the fact that there is no real independent EDI support network in the UK for organisations and Practitioners to share best practice and come together to lobby the Government on key issues.

For those that place value on EDI, many have been motivated by a moral obligation or because of changing legal obligations. Today, there is a greater realisation of the clear business benefits to embracing EDI, managing it effectively and making it work in favour of organisations.  Unfortunately this approach is confined to a minority of forward thinking organisations.

But for those working in EDI, there is almost always no career path. Becoming an EDI Manager usually is the end of the line. EDI Practitioners and the many thousands who have been given responsibly to look into EDI compliance related matters often feel alone and isolated.

Independent voice

There are two organisations that have an overall responsibility for Equalities in the UK.  These are the Government Equalities Office and the Equalities and Human Rights Commission. Neither are independent of Government. In fact there is no organisation that is set up to independently check , positively challenge and lobby these government bodies on matters which matter to people who are a long away from the corridors of power.

The National Centre for Diversity is developing its unique tri-sector membership network for those that work in and around issues of equality, diversity and inclusion.  There are clear benefits and membership is open at two levels:

  1.  To individuals
  2. To organisations as a whole.

Summary of some of the benefits:

Have your voice heard - lobbying is the key role of the network. Too often things happen to us in EDI and we don’t get an opportunity , at grass roots, to shape and define policy decisions that come down to us and have deep impacts to the way that we work.

Receive information, advice and guidance on the issues that affect to you. The network will synthesise and assess research or own research and research done by others on matters relating to EDI

Increases opportunities for networking through a series of seminars and events that you will find invaluable

Peer support – you will be able to meet and network with people from different sectors to enable you to open yourself up to new perspectives, new approaches and new ideas from the public, private or voluntary sectors.
